Mar. 29—MORGANTOWN — Spencer Barnett and Armani Guzaman combined for six hits and seven RBIs on Friday to lead the WVU baseball team to a 20-6 victory against BYU inside Miller Park in Provo, Utah.
WVU's victory evened the three-games series at one game apiece and came after the Cougars (14-10, 4-4 Big 12) took down WVU 14-5 in the first game on Thursday.
BOX SCORE WVU took control with seven runs in the seventh inning that gave the Mountaineers a 12-2 lead. WVU added eight more runs in the eighth inning. The 20 runs scored were the most for the Mountaineers against a Big 12 team since scoring 21 against Kansas in 2018.
In the seventh, Barnett tripled to center to score two runs, while Brodie Kresser followed with an RBI single.
Jace Rineart and Gavin Kelly both collected two RBIs with base hits with the bases loaded.
In the eighth, Guzman scored two with a double and Alex Marot also had a two-RBI double. Ellis Garcia had a bases-loaded hit, while Kyle West scored another run by getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Jorge Valdes walked with the bases loaded.
In all, WVU (21-4, 3-3) collected 19 hits, walked an additional eight times and was hit by a pitch five times. The Mountaineers hit.522 (12 of 23) with runners in scoring position and were 3 of 5 as a team with the bases loaded.
Skylar King added his second home run of the season for the Mountaineers and Kelly also had three RBIs in the game.
WVU reliever Chase Meyer picked up his fifth win of the season in relief. He came in for starter Gavin Van Kempen in the fifth inning and went 2 1 /3 innings allowing no hits and no runs, while striking out four. Van Kempen allowed five hits and two runs over 4 2 /3 innings.
