World Preview: Will It Be Swiss Army Or Swiss Cheese?

There's no telling exactly how Switzerland will fare at the 2025 World Championships. They have strong goaltending, and a couple stars, but they've also watched their level of compete drop year over year.

Luckily for Switzerland the idea of being in Group A or Group B is about to become a moot point, because otherwise, they'd be at serious risk yet again of losing their spot among the world's top nations. Sweden and Germany continue to press for that spot.

Switzerland will hope their roster turns out to be more of a Swiss Army knife, than porous Swiss cheese at this tournament.

Here's a look at Switzerland's roster for the 2025 World Championships.

Roster Notes

It's fun to see 16-year-old defender Laure Mériguet join Naemi Herzig, Ivana Wey, Alena Lynn Rossel, Alessia Baechler, Leoni Balzer, and Elena Gaberell as the teenage core of this roster. It's also nearing the point of desperate times and desperate measures for Switzerland as captain and Swiss legend Lara Stalder moves closer to the end of her career. Conceivably, Stalder could play for several more seasons, but it doesn't usurp the need for reinforcements to emerge. Alini Muller and Stalder can't do all the lifting, and Andrea Brandli cannot pretend to be a wall year after year to keep Switzerland in games. They need someone to step forward, and they need more players in the NCAA and PWHL to make that possible. Rahel Enzler and Sinja Leeman could provide some of this relief if they can translate stellar PostFinance League results to the international stage.

Switzerland's X-Factor

One thing Switzerland has that other nations don't, is roster cohesion. These players know each other better than almost any lineup in this tournament. 14 players comes from three teams in the Swiss league. But cohesion doesn't relate to success. If there's one player that could provide a necessary boost for Switzerland, it's Rahel Enzler. She was the top Swiss player in the PostFinance league scoring 52 points in 28 games, only two off the league lead. This coming after a strong NCAA senior season with Maine. She's not going to be a Wold killer against Canada or USA, but she could be a difference maker against middle of the pack nations. Switzerland needs someone to step forward in support of Muller and Stalder, and Enzler is the leading candidate.

One To Watch For Switzerland

Alessia Baechler has continued to progress as one of Switzerland's best players. She's still only 19, and the nation can't afford for her development to stall in the PostFinance League. While Switzerland has stars up front, they don't have the same high end talent on the blueline. Baechler is as close as it gets for a blue chip blueliner for the Swiss.

Eyes On 2026

Switzerland will be a stronger roster by 2026 with another year of development for players including Ivana Wey and Naemi Herzig who will be at their core for years. Alina Muller and Lara Stalder, barring injury, will remain the stars. Their roster should remain almost identical unless they choose to fast track another teen like Norina Muller or Sonja Inkamp.
