World Cup looks a distant dream for Scotland after Greece debacle
After suffering relegation from the top tier of the Nations League, Scotland will now focus on qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
Based on their performance against Greece at Hampden Park yesterday, their chances of featuring in the tournament are remote.
Leading after winning 1-0 in Greece, Steve Clarke’s side were torn to pieces in front of their fans. Clarke was powerless to stop the rout.
Scotland must consider a managerial change
While Clarke has done a decent enough job with Scotland, he failed to cover himself in glory against a talented Greek side at Hampden.
He made several questionable decisions before and during the game, and a 3-0 victory did not flatter Greece.
Finishing top of a qualifying group that includes Denmark, Greece and Belarus will not be easy, and a second-place finish is far from guaranteed.
Scotland undoubtedly have the players to qualify for the World Cup, but allowing Clarke to oversee the campaign could be a bad move.
He has already indicated he will quit the role next year. Scotland would be well advised to bring his exit forward and give someone else a crack at the job.
