Wisconsin sophomore guard John Blackwell announced on Instagram Thursday afternoon that he is declaring for the NBA draft, while maintaining his college eligibility.
Blackwell also noted at the end of his message that his intention, if he returns to college, is to return to Wisconsin and continue to play under head coach Greg Gard. Blackwell has until June 15 to withdraw from the draft and utilize his remaining two years of eligibility.
If Blackwell decides to keep his name entered into the NBA draft past that date, he would be the 10th Badger to leave the team this offseason — sixth via graduation and three (as of now) via the transfer portal.

Blackwell has spent two seasons with the Badgers. He took on a much larger role as a starter in 2024-25, averaging 15.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game. His best game this season came against UT Rio Grande Valley in November: 30 points and seven rebounds.
There is a significant chance that Blackwell still returns to Wisconsin for his junior year. For example, A.J. Storr similarly tested the draft waters last offseason before eventually transferring to Kansas.
In the event that Blackwell stays in the draft, Greg Gard and his staff would have their work cut out for them to find a replacement for the star guard’s production.
