Why this trip to Peoria was all the more special for retired NBA star Shaun Livingston

A championship era for one of Peoria's best high school basketball teams was honored Saturday with induction into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame.

The 2003 and 2004 IHSA state champions from Peoria High School were among the individuals and teams inducted into the GPSHOF's 43rd class this weekend at the Peoria Civic Center ballroom.

Shaun Livingston, 39, a high school all-American and future NBA veteran, was in attendance along with coaches and 17 others players from the teams, which went 62-3 in two seasons with largely the same team under HOF coach Chuck Buescher, spending time among the national ranks during its second title run.

Livingston, who was previously inducted as an individual to the GPHOF in 2022, helped coordinate — assuring every former teammate who wanted could attend the banquet.

"It's different, because this is a shared experience," Livingston said after the ceremony. "These are guys I grew up with, so it makes it all that more special. ... That's what sports is about."

After high school, Livingston went right to the NBA as the fourth overall pick of the Los Angeles Clippers in 2004. He played 833 NBA games over parts of 14 seasons, overcame a brutal knee injury, and was part of the Golden State Warriors championships in 2015, 2017 and 2018.
