Why did Caleb Grill leave Iowa State? Here's how he did at Missouri
Some Iowans might have noticed a familiar player on the court in the Drake vs. Missouri game Thursday night.
Former Iowa State University men's basketball player Caleb Grill now plays as a guard for the Missouri Tigers. So what happened to Grill before leaving Iowa State?
Why did Caleb Grill leave Iowa State University?
Grill left Iowa State in March 2023 after the team said that he failed to meet the program's expectations.
“We hold our players to high standards and there are expectations that our student-athletes are held accountable for,” said Iowa State men’s basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger in a statement released by the school.
Caleb Grill shares mental health struggles after leaving Iowa State
Grill later posted on social media that he said something that he regretted and it cost him his opportunity at ISU. He also wrote about his struggles with mental health.
Grill was the third-leading scorer for Iowa State at the time and started 22 of the 25 games in his final season with the team.
"While everyone was commenting about the hair or the funny actions on the court," Grill wrote, "it was a way for me to get out of that state of mind and feel like being myself instead of the dark place I have been in this season."
What are Caleb Grill's stats at Missouri?
Grill has averaged 13.7 points scored and 3.6 rebounds during his 2024-2025 season with the Missouri Tigers. Over the last few years he battled injuries.
This season, he injured his neck during a game against Lindenwood in December. He spent five games on the sidelines.
Regardless of his injury, Grill is a 40.5% shooter from 3-point range and Mizzou's second-leading scorer behind Mark Mitchell.
