On Sunday, the 2025 women's NCAA Tournament national champion will be crowned.

That means the 2024 national champion has a chance to be a part of history, as South Carolina women's basketball aims to beat red-hot UConn Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.

The Gamecocks have an opportunity to become the first women's college basketball team to repeat as champions since UConn did so from 2013 to 2016. However, Dawn Staley and South Carolina will need to take down Paige Bueckers in her final collegiate game to do so.

South Carolina won the 2024 women's national championship last season. The Gamecocks defeated Caitlin Clark and Iowa 87-75 in the championship round in Cleveland. The Gamecocks ended Clark's career by denying her a ring, the same they could do to Bueckers on Sunday.

The Gamecocks also defeated No. 16 Presbyterian (91-39), No. 8 North Carolina (88-41), No. 4 Indiana (79-75) and No. 3 Oregon State (70-58) in their path to the 2024 women's Final Four. South Carolina defeated No. 3 NC State 78-59 in the national semifinal.

How many championships does South Carolina have?

South Carolina women's basketball has won three national championships. The Gamecocks defeated Clark and Iowa last season in Cleveland. South Carolina defeated UConn 64-49 in 2022, the last time the Huskies reached the national championship game in Minneapolis.

Staley and the Gamecocks won their first national championship in 2017, when they defeated SEC rival Mississippi State 67-55 in Dallas.

Most women's national championships

UConn leads all women's programs with 11 national championships, all under Auriemma, and all since 1982. Tennessee is second nationally with eight championships, all coming under legendary coach Pat Summitt.
