The Tennessee Volunteers will to decide on a new starting quarterback for the fall as the program parted ways with Nico Iamaleava on Saturday.
Iamaleava entering the NCAA transfer portal leaves the Vols without the quarterback that led them to the College Football Playoff last season, but there are solid in-house options available.
Jake Merklinger, a redshirt freshman, is the leader in the clubhouse to take over for Iamaleava. However, don't rule out true freshman quarterback George MacIntyre to make a push for the job. The experienced Merklinger has the clear advantage right now, but MacIntyre is a viable option.
The Brentwood Academy product and four-star prospect will likely give Merklinger a run for his money for the starting job, provided that Tennessee doesn't add another option in the transfer portal.
Merklinger and MacIntyre are the two clearest options at the moment to take over for Iamaleava, but others could present themselves as the spring transfer process gets going. This is by no means a settled conversation.
