“We created enough to win” – Maresca blind to team’s major issues again

Enzo Maresca spoke to Sky Sports’ cameras after yesterday afternoon’s draw with Ipswich, and was asked to try and explain how his team had once again fumbled a great chance to take a step towards playing in the Champions League:

“It’s tough, especially because we started very, very well. The first 20 minutes we created many chances, and then after the goals we conceded, for 20-25 minutes we weren’t good enough. The two goals we conceded we can do much better. And in the second half, again, we were “ass”, our team,” the coach said.

He then waxed philosophical about the fine margins in football:

“In football sometimes a small thing can change the dynamic of the game. I think their goal changed a little bit the dynamic of the game, it’s a moment where you have to be strong, you have to think there is time enough to recover the result, unfortunately, as I said, I think since their goal we were not good enough in the first half, but the first 20 minutes we had many chances.”

“In those moments, if you’re able to score the goal, the game changes completely in our favour. Unfortunately we didn’t score, we conceded, and in the second half he had a good reaction and I think we created enough to win the game.”

As always, it’s full of ifs, buts and maybes. If we hadn’t conceded two bad goals, and had scored our chances, we would have won. Obviously. But we didn’t. The question is what he can do about it.

You can point to the little things all you want, but ultimately we’ve got a shocking, error prone goalkeeper and a striker who has gone 11 games without scoring. Is that all bad luck too?
