If the name Shion Crawford sounds familiar, you may have heard it not once but twice during the 2025 winter. The 20-year-old from Haleiwa scored two remarkable waves that went viral online. The first was an enormous backside full rotation on the left at Rocky Point. Then came the thunderous Off The Wall barrel, where he raced and bounced blindly over the foamball.
Shion ain’t a one-and-done kind of guy. The video below, filmed by Brady Lawrence, captures a barrage of snaps, cutbacks and tubes from just two weeks of North Shore action. No fluff indeed, it’s “Straight To The Point.”
Considering his youth, skills et and potential upside, it makes sense while Billabong just signed him. He’s doing surfing, particularly at difficult waves like Haleiwa and Rocky Point, that deserves eyeballs. It’s the kind of surfing that, if you saw it from the shoulder, might invoke a pang of “damn.”
Expect to see more of Shion in a jersey this year, too. He’s a lock to have a crack at the 2025 Challenger Series. This is his second season finishing atop the Hawaii/Tahiti regional rankings, no small feat considering the talent pool. In his three Qualifying Series events this year, he’s finished runner-up three times: Sunset Beach, Halewia and Avatoru (a right in Tahiti).
Last year, Jackson Bunch was the only Hawaiian surfer on the CS to qualify for the 2025 Championship Tour. With surfing like this, Shion could be the next flagbearer soon.
