Video replay review used for first time in MIAA hockey state championship
For the first time ever, video replay review was used during an MIAA hockey state final.
In the second period of the Division 4 boys hockey state championship, a Dedham close call was ruled a no-goal.
On a hard drive to the net, Dedham's Brian Dunne bid did not count. Referees said the net came loose before the puck crossed the line.
Just 19 seconds later, Winthrop's Michae Holgerson scored a short-handed goal to put the Vikings up 1-0.
Replay review was added this year after a controversial ending to last year's Division 1 boys hockey final. St. John's Prep broke a 2-2 tie with what was ruled as a winning goal, but the goal was scored by Johnny Tighe clearly after time expired.

“Tough way to lose. I feel for the kids," said Winchester coach Gino Khachadourian after the loss. "They left everything on the ice and did whatever they could do. To lose a game like that, it’s just not right. … They’re all distraught in (the locker room), and now with social media, (the replay is) all out there. That’s what makes it worse. I wish nobody saw it and we could say, ‘The game’s over, we lost,’ whatever. But now with the whole social media thing, it’s just tough for them to swallow."
