GEORGETOWN — Wrong place, wrong time.
Lake Travis trailed 2-1 at the half then was outscored 4-1 in the second half to lose to Coppell in the Class 6A Division I state finals. The Cavaliers closed out their soccer season with 22 wins and just two losses and only allowed one opponent to score more than two goals in a match.
Unfortunately, that opponent was Coppell, who beat Lake Travis 4-0 on the first day of the season in early January and then again 6-2 Saturday afternoon for a girls state soccer championship.
Lake Travis fell behind 2-0 as the Cowgirls had goals from Neerali Kapadia and Monica Morales for a 2-0 lead after 25 minutes. Lake Travis managed their first goal of the season against Coppell when Banin Patterson launched into the net in the 31st minute to cut the lead to 2-1 at the half.
Second half was mostly Cowgirls as Summer Chen scored five minutes in. Lake Travis answered with a goal by Kayla Gibbons, assisted by Mya Griffin.
Morales scored again in the 49th minute to make it 4-2, Chen scored her second goal of the match in the 53rd minute and Kapadia added her second goal in the 56th minute for the final 6-2 margin.
Coppell entered the match with a 21-2-3 record and had outscored opponents 14-3 in its five playoff wins, including a 3-0 win in state semifinals over previously top ranked The Woodlands.
Lake Travis had a tremendous season but against all but the one opponent and those two losses leaves the Cavaliers wearing silver. Cavaliers did get strong play from Griffin, Amelia Clark, Breckyn Ferrell, Ella Carr and Jaz Diaz as well as the Cavalier goal scorers. On the pitch, the Cowgirls inside-out attack using the sidelines and long runs negated the Cavaliers superior midfield play.
The Cavaliers were 5-0 in the playoffs with a 18-6 scoring advantage and recorded 14 shutouts on the season — but Saturday just wasn’t their day. Lake Travis returns six starters and a bevy of talented reserves from its district championship.
Head coach William Maloney is in his third season and has compiled a record of 54-13-6 including a 35-5-5 district mark.
