Tickets, hotels still available for MSU men vs. Bryant in Cleveland this weekend
EAST LANSING — Michigan State University's men's basketball team is on its way to another March Madness tournament, Coach Tom Izzo's record-setting 27th straight, with a late Friday game against Bryant University in Cleveland.
That's close enough to drive to for many MSU fans, and with five days left before the game, allows plenty of time to book a flight and get a room. And fans may want to make a weekend of it, hoping the Spartans win Friday night and face the winner of the game between 7th-seeded Marquette and 10th-seeded New Mexico.
Here's what you need to know if you want to see the game in-person.
Tickets for MSU vs. Bryant University can be had
Tickets for the game against 2-seed MSU and 15-seed Bryant, a private school in Rhode Island with about 3,500 students, are still readily available, as of Monday at noon.
They're not cheap, however, with the starting price of around $250 for nosebleed seats at Cleveland's Rocket Arena and going up to more than $1,200 a ticket for fifth row seats near mid-court on StubHub.
Getting to Cleveland
Next up is getting there, because a ticket won't do you much good if you're not even in the Buckeye State.
With a nearly-as-late-as-possible tipoff time of 10 p.m. Friday, there should be plenty of time to make the roughly 235-mile drive to the arena.
The drive from Lansing to Cleveland is about 3 1/2 hours, so leaving at 5 p.m. could still get you there in time, even with traffic and a pit stop, but maybe leave work an hour early unless you like being the buzzer beater.
There are no direct commercial flights from Lansing to Cleveland. You can make the trek with layovers but those quickest flight would be about as long as driving and would cost about $600 per flier, with flights available on both Delta and American Air, according to Expedia.com.
Detroit Metro Airport offers direct flights, with less than an hour in the air, starting at $289, per Expedia.
There aren't many good mass transit options going from East Lansing to Cleveland and you'd probably have to start traveling on Thursday to make it.
Greyhound offers bus service to West Salem, Ohio (40 miles from Cleveland) for about $106 per person for a one-way trip. Amtrak offers several train services, with stations in East Lansing and Cleveland but no direct routes. A coach-class train trip leaving East Lansing on Thursday and returning on Sunday can be booked, as of noon Monday, for about $550 for two adults.
Downtown Cleveland hotels filling up
The tournament is packing many of Cleveland's downtown hotels within walking distance, where available rooms are starting around $400 a night.
But go five or 10 miles away and there are plenty of places to stay for under $200 a night.
