Thiago Motta received ‘support’ from Juventus ownership: My future ‘not the priority’
Juventus coach Thiago Motta insists his future at the Allianz Stadium is ‘not the priority’ and reveals he has received support from the club owners this week.
Motta is under scrutiny following a 4-0 loss against Atalanta last week.
The Bianconeri visit Fiorentina at the Stadio Franchi on Sunday and three players have recovered for the upcoming fixture.
“We have Rouhi, Savona, and Conceiçao,” Motta said at a pre-match press conference on Saturday.
“As always, playing in Florence will be tough and challenging. I expect the best Fiorentina at the moment. We know they are a great team with a coach who is doing well and quality players.”
Several candidates, including Gian Piero Gasperini, Antonio Conte, and Roberto Mancini, have been linked with the Juventus job for next season.
“I’m only thinking about Fiorentina. I have total confidence from the club, and I appreciated the support from the ownership this week,” Motta said.
Thiago Motta: My Juventus future ‘not the priority’
“Many times, we have performed very well and won crucial matches. Other times, we haven’t been able to and faced difficulties. Tomorrow is the same story. It’s the most important match because it’s the next one. We are facing a tough team, and we must give our all to win.”
Juventus sit fourth in the Serie A table, just one point above fifth-placed Lazio, so Motta insisted that his priority lies on the pitch despite rumours about his future.
“My future is not the priority. The priority is tomorrow’s match, we need to play a great game,” he argued.
“We are coming from a match where the result was hard to digest. Playing at home, we saw that we played well for 40 minutes, even though we can improve. We made too many mistakes and allowed too many counterattacks.
“At first, we weren’t happy; we were angry, and we expected to do things differently. But we move on and restart. Getting back up is what we do. I see both the disappointment and the determination to react immediately. In training, I saw the team preparing in the best possible way.
“We always have the responsibility to give our best; it’s our duty,” he continued.
“My players have always given their all. Sometimes, matches have gone as we wanted; other times, we couldn’t manage. Now, we focus on the next game, which is the most important thing.”
Tuttosport even reported that ex-Italy coach Roberto Mancini would be ready to replace Motta immediately if the Bianconeri suffer another heavy defeat in Florence tomorrow.
“In our profession, the coach is always under scrutiny, and that’s fair,” Motta admitted.
“I am the first to question myself and analyse our work daily. The hardest but most important thing is staying calm to assess our situation objectively. We have done many things well, and others we can improve. Communication with the club is continuous and constant.
“This week, I appreciated the support from the ownership. I am the first to put myself under discussion, and when things don’t go well, it’s only right. Tomorrow is a great opportunity to show our value again.”
Motta refused to detail what club owners told him and added: “I don’t pay much attention to outside talk, but I respect all opinions.
“All our preparation has been focused on the match against Fiorentina,” he concluded.
“We must be ready to compete, win duels, and gain ground to overcome our opponent.”
