The super-sub revolution – Barcelona’s forgotten star is quietly becoming Flick’s special weapon
The role of an impact substitute in football has become increasingly rare in today’s game.
In the past, players like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were known for coming off the bench to change the course of a match.
However, modern footballers generally prefer to be consistent starters rather than specialists in influencing games as substitutes.
Despite this shift, having a strong bench remains crucial, especially in long and gruelling competitions like La Liga, where squad depth and consistency make a significant difference.
A well-equipped squad with players who can come on and immediately influence a game can be the key to winning titles. Real Madrid have long understood the importance of this, and their current squad reflects this philosophy perfectly.
Barcelona have their Solskjaer
At Barcelona, one player who has embraced this role effectively is Ferran Torres. With Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal taking the spotlight this season, Torres has found himself in a secondary role.
However, instead of struggling with reduced game time, he has adapted and made himself a valuable option for Hansi Flick when called upon.
One of the key reasons for his effectiveness is his mindset and playing style. From the very start, Torres has aligned well with Flick’s tactical philosophy, particularly in his direct and attacking approach.
His ability to drive forward aggressively suits the fast-paced game that Barcelona look to implement.
Another major advantage is his versatility. Torres can operate in any of the three attacking positions, making him a reliable option whenever changes are needed.
He is capable of partnering with Lewandowski upfront or providing width on either flank. His intelligent movement, combined with his pace, adds a dynamic edge to Barcelona’s attack, often stretching opposition defences.
There are even debates about whether his playing style complements the team’s overall structure better than Lewandowski’s, although the Polish striker’s ability to convert chances remains unmatched.
There are numbers to prove
Despite not being a guaranteed starter, Torres has featured in 32 matches across all competitions this season. Out of those, he has started in 10 games while coming off the bench in the remaining 22.
His contribution has been impressive, with 13 goals to his name. These goals are spread across different competitions, with 7 in La Liga, 2 in the Champions League, and 4 in the Copa del Rey.
Additionally, he has provided three assists, showcasing his ability to contribute beyond just scoring.
What makes his goal tally even more remarkable is his efficiency in front of goal. Having played a total of 1,127 minutes this season, Torres averages a goal every 87 minutes.
Such a return highlights his effectiveness, particularly considering his limited starting opportunities.
His recent performance against Atletico Madrid, where he netted a brace, further reinforced his growing importance in the squad. He has seamlessly adapted to this new role and continues to deliver when called upon.
Ferran Torres may not have developed into the star player that many initially envisioned when he joined Barcelona, but his ability to thrive as an impact player has added another dimension to Flick’s attacking options.
Instead of being a forgotten figure in the squad, he has evolved into one of the most valuable squad players in La Liga.
