Alex Ovechkin's pursuit of history came to its inevitable conclusion on Sunday with the Capitals star scoring his 895th career goal to break Wayne Gretzky's record.
It was the kind of milestone moment that called for a game-pausing ceremony. Like, it was a huge deal. But credit to the social team at the New York Islanders. If Ovechkin's record-breaking goal was going to come against them, the team was going to have some fun with the moment.
After that goal brought cut the Islanders' lead to 2-1, the team's Twitter/X account played it off as it would for any other goal against the Islanders. It tweeted this without noting the historic significance of the goal.
