Texas Tech baseball at Houston: Preview, how to watch
One month into the season, the Texas Tech baseball team opens Big 12 play this weekend trying to do something it's yet to accomplish: Beat another team in that team's park.
The Red Raiders (3-11) were swept in a three-game series at then-No. 8 North Carolina to start the season and at Grand Canyon last weekend. They go to the University of Houston (11-4) for games at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 6:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
On Wednesday, Tech coach Tim Tadlock disagreed with a premise that his team played better last weekend except for one inning, Grand Canyon's 10-run eighth on Friday that broke a 2-2 tie. The number of quality at-bats and making routine defensive plays is still lacking, he said.
"We haven't handled different environments, different atmospheres, things changing," Tadlock said. "We're trying to address it. We haven't handled it real good. Didn't handle it in Chapel Hill, the (opening-day) doubleheader. ... I didn't think we handled it real good at Grand Canyon either."
It's a challenge the Red Raiders signed up for. They scheduled only five of their first 17 games at home, hoping for an RPI boost from the series at UNC and GCU in particular. Their one win away from home was against Illinois at the Las Vegas College Baseball Classic.
Now conference play starts, and Tech is last in the Big 12 in team batting average, runs scored, fielding percentage, pitchers' ERA and runs allowed.
And if that's not enough, No. 2 starter Lukas Pirko made an injury-related exit in the first inning Saturday at GCU. Tadlock said Wednesday the sophomore righthander will be out for "a couple of weeks."
Tyler Boudreau will take Pirko's spot in the rotation and start Saturday's game. Boudreau was regarded as the team's fifth starter beginning the season, but his one start has been the Red Raiders' best. He threw six scoreless innings in a 13-1 victory March 5 against UC San Diego, yielding two hits and striking out nine.
Houston is coming off a three-game sweep of Grambling State, extending its win streak to four. The Cougars have taken two of three from three opponents: in home series against Minnesota and Texas-Arlington and in a road series at California.
The Cougars' top hitters include second baseman Connor McGinnis (.417, 3 home runs, 16 RBI), right fielder Xavier Perez (.378-4-20), third baseman Aaron Lugo (.333-1-17), center fielder Tre Broussard (.295-4-11, 9 stolen bases) and first baseman Cade Climie (.295-5-14). McGinnis and Climie, the preseason Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, came from Blinn College's 2024 NJCAA championship team.
