Texas falls to No. 8 Tennessee, faces uncertain NCAA tournament fate
Texas’ first SEC Tournament appearance had its moments, with wins over Texas A&M and Oklahoma marking a successful debut. But the Longhorns’ run ended Friday in an 83-72 loss to No. 8 Tennessee in the quarterfinals.
Texas (19-15), which won the Big 12 Tournament twice in the last four seasons, entered its first SEC Tournament as the No. 13 seed. Kadin Shedrick and Jordan Pope each scored 14 points for the Longhorns, while freshman Tre Johnson added 11. Tennessee led 41-38 at halftime before pulling away in the second half, building a 65-50 lead midway through against a Texas squad playing its third game in three days.
The fourth-seeded Volunteers (26-6) secured a victory for head coach Rick Barnes, who notched his 832nd career win. Tennessee advances to the semifinals, where it will face No. 3 Auburn, a 62-57 winner over Ole Miss.
The Longhorns came to Nashville losing four of their last five games and with many uncertainties surrounding Head Coach Rodney Terry. With Selection Sunday two days away, Texas is now projected to be among the First Four, leaving its NCAA Tournament hopes on edge.
