St Helens earned a relatively comfortable win over Wakefield to keep pace at the top of the Super League table.

Morgan Knowles, Matt Whitley and Harry Robertson crossed in the first half to give Saints a 20-0 half-time lead.

Whitley added his second from James Bell's acrobatic offload to extend the advantage after the break.

With the game well beyond them, Wakefield replied with two tries from Oliver Pratt and another from Mason Lino.

It was a fourth defeat of the season for Trinity, who stay eighth, and they were quickly out of the game.

After Knowles' opening try Saints worked the play left and found a hole for Whitley to score their second before they attacked down the right and freed Robertson to dart into the corner.

After the break, the game was put beyond doubt with the night's best try as Jack Welsby's chip towards the try-line was taken by James Bell and he offloaded over his head for Whitley to cross for a second time.

Wakefield restored some pride with three late tries, including a fine break from Mathieu Cozza who offloaded for Lino to go over.
