Spurs' Stephon Castle posts monster double-double in win over 76ers
Stephon Castle finished with a rare stat line and registered his second double-double on Friday, helping the San Antonio Spurs to a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.
Castle produced 17 points, 14 assists, five rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot in the 128-120 victory at the Frost Bank Center. He went 6-of-14 from the field and was a game-high plus-20 in nearly 35 minutes as the Spurs won for the fourth time in six games.
The fourth pick became the sixth rookie in history to reach that stat line in a single game and the first since Ben Simmons (2017-18). His 14 assists are tied for the most in a game this season (Isaiah Collier) and the second-most in franchise history by a first-year player (Johnny Moore, 1980-81).
"I thought he did a really good picking his spots," Spurs interim coach Mitch Johnson said. "Early on, I thought he was a little bit overly zealous or forceful when they showed a crowd. When he is able to make that early pass, it really makes the defense make a tough decision: Are you going to show a crowd, or are you going to stay home? He is so good at taking up space that when he really understands when to take the gaps and when to make people better when there are two on the ball, he'll be a dynamic force to be reckoned with because he has the passing ability and vision."

Castle is averaging 14 points, 3.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds on 42.8% shooting from the field in 68 games this season. He leads the rookie class in scoring and is one of four first-year players with multiple 30-point games (Dalton Knecht, Jared McCain, Zaccharie Risacher).
The 20-year-old returned to the starting lineup on March 14 following the season-ending finger injury to De'Aaron Fox. He has scored at least 17 points in five games over that stretch, averaging 21 points, 5.6 assists, four rebounds and 1.2 steals on 45.7% shooting from the field.
Castle, the Rookie of the Year front-runner, has played an integral role with the Spurs this season and is emerging as a franchise cornerstone this year and beyond for his play on the court.
