Serie A | Monza 1-3 Como: Strong comeback revitalises Fabregas

Como completed the comeback from an early Dany Mota Carvalho goal to push Monza ever closer to relegation with Jonathan Ikone, Assane Diao and Mergim Vojvoda strikes.

The hosts were rock bottom and practically doomed already, missing Matteo Pessina and Andrea Carboni. Cesc Fabregas was irritated with his squad after scraping two points from the last four rounds, held by Venezia and Empoli. Ignace van der Brempt, Alberto Dossena and Ivan Azon were on the treatment table, as Nico Paz and Dele Alli returned from suspension.

See how it all unfolded on the Liveblog.

It was Monza who took a surprise early lead when Dany Mota Carvalho controlled a long Georgios Kyriakopoulos ball over the top and Oliver Kempf seemed to have it under control, but was far too weak in his defending, so the striker got it back to sweep in with the inside of the right boot from eight yards.

Como equalised 11 minutes later, when Jonathan Ikone cut inside from the right past two defenders and drilled a left-foot finish into the far bottom corner, with Stefano Turati a little unsighted.

Tasos Douvikas got his first Como start and stung Turati’s gloves, only a warning as they turned the game around when Pedro Pereira failed to effectively cut out the Maxence Caqueret roll across from the right, allowing Assane Diao to pounce from 12 yards.

It really should’ve been 3-1 moments later when Dany Mota was robbed in midfield to spark a counter-attack, but Diao saw his shot parried by Turati and the Douvikas follow-up was blasted over the bar.

The referee pointed to the spot just before half-time when Jean Butez brought down Dany Mota, but the Monza striker was offside.

Straight after the restart, Butez made an extraordinary double save, pushing the Keita Balde Diao strike onto the crossbar with one hand, then doing the same on Dany Mota’s follow-up.

Moments later, Como extended their lead instead, as Mergim Vojvoda was not closed down on a Caqueret pass and smashed a right-foot rocket into the near top corner.

Butez again denied Dany Mota with a fine reaction save at the near post, while Douvikas turned Danilo D’Ambrosio to skim the upright from the edge of the area.
