Seattle Mariners catcher, former Smoky Mountain star Cal Raleigh agrees to massive contract
Seattle Mariners catcher and former Smoky Mountain standout Cal Raleigh signed a six-year, $105 million contract extension Tuesday, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
The switch-hitting catcher broke out in 2023, earning MVP votes, and one-upped his season in 2024, earning a Gold Glove and finishing 12th in the American League MVP race. He batted .220 with 34 home runs and 100 RBIs. He was also given the Platinum Glove, awarded to the best defender in each league.
As a senior with the Mustangs in 2015, Raleigh batted .469 with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs and 20 stolen bases, earning selection to the Louisville Slugger All-American team.
After graduating, Raleigh flipped commitments from Clemson to Florida State, where he became an All-ACC first team player and All-American second-team selection. He hit .276 with the Seminoles, accumulating 34 doubles, 22 home runs and 93 RBIs.
Raleigh was drafted in the third round of the 2018 MLB Draft by the Mariners and made his MLB debut in 2021.
