Scaroni gives stadium update and admits Milan are ‘asking ourselves questions about the future’
AC Milan president Paolo Scaroni has commented on the new stadium project with Inter, and admitted that it has been a disappointing season which forces questions on the future.
It was a week of news on the stadium front, as Milan and Inter submitted the Document of feasibility of project alternatives (DocFap) on Tuesday to the City Council. The document also contains the offer to purchase the San Siro stadium and the surrounding area by the clubs.
In the meantime, Milan are in desperate need of another three points to keep their hopes alive of at least getting a Europa League spot. Como will certainly be a tricky test given that they have already secured some big scalps this season, and play some good football under Cesc Fabregas.
Scaroni spoke to DAZN moments before kick-off at San Siro and answered questions both on the present and future of Milan, with his comments relayed by MilanNews.
The club is evolving. What is your point of view on the team and the future at the moment?
“It’s been a difficult season, there’s no doubt about it. A season that has disappointed our fans and us too. And we’re asking ourselves questions about the future: how to make the future better. I don’t know if I should call all this evolution, it seems like a natural process that all clubs go through.”
Did you see any mistakes? Is it better not to play in the Conference League?
“I like to remember that we brought home a nice cup, it wasn’t just a negative season. We don’t consider the season over.
“The Champions League is very far away but we continue to fight and if we manage to obtain the qualification of another European competition, we will do it with the same commitment that we have always had in international events.”
Can you give an update on the stadium?
“I have been dealing with the stadium since 2019, I can’t help but say that in the end, after a whole series of twists and turns, we returned to the 2019 proposal: to build a new stadium together, Milan and Inter, the best stadium in Europe here at San Siro.
“I regret the fact that we had to look for solutions in the face of vetoes that are typical of our country. We presented an offer to buy the stadium and the surrounding areas, to be able to start with our project. The ball is in the court of the Council that must respond to the document.
“I am optimistic, I also see in Mayor Sala a great desire to leave Milan a wonderful infrastructure that Milan needs. We all love the Meazza: we will leave an important vestige, agreed with the fine arts, which will remain as a reminder of the stadium where we accomplished great feats.
“But the new stadium will be open to everyone: to families, to the disabled who have enormous problems coming to the stadium.”
