Sam White steals home to push No. 24 WVU to a 3-1 win against James Madison
Mar. 20—MORGANTOWN — The No. 24 WVU baseball team got creative to take down James Madison, 3-1, on Wednesday night inside Kendrick Family Ballpark to complete a two-game sweep.
With the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning, the Mountaineers (18-1) used a triple steal to take the lead. Sam White was on third, while Jace Rineart was on second and Skylar King was on first. All three took off on the pitch, with White beating the throw to home plate to give WVU a 2-1 lead. It was the second time this season the Mountaineers pulled off a steal of home.
BOX SCORE Seconds later, Rineart scored on a wild pitch for the final score.
Freshman David Hagen threw five innings with four strikeouts, while allowing just one run to earn his second win of the season. Reese Bassinger and Jack Kartsonas combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen. They combined for six strikeouts. Kartsonas earned his first save of the season.
King went 3-for-3 at the plate to improve his season average to.444, while also making a stellar diving catch in centerfield. Brodie Kresser had the only RBI of the game for the Mountaineers with a sacrifice fly in the third inning that tied the game 1-1. White reached base on a walk in the fourth. He went 0 for 3 otherwise, ending his 14-game hitting streak.
James Madison (7-14) jumped out to an early lead with a solo home run from Kyle Langley in the first, but that was all the Dukes managed.
The Dukes did not have a runner reach third base the rest of the night, as West Virginia earned a win before Big 12 foe Arizona travels to Morgantown this weekend for a three-game series that begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday.
