Ruben Amorim admits it has been ‘hard’ for Man Utd talisman and urges team to deliver trophies for him
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says he and his side need to deliver trophies for captain Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes starred again as United progressed to the Europa League quarter-finals to face Lyon, scoring a hat-trick in their 4-1 round of 16 second-leg win over Real Sociedad.
United found themselves behind early on when Mikel Oyarzabal converted from the spot but Fernandes scored two penalties of his own to put his side ahead before adding a third, and Diogo Dalot completed the scoring with a stoppage-time goal.
And afterwards, Amorim said Fernandes’ performances for United means he deserves more success than he has had so far.
“We need to help him win titles because he deserves this,” he said.
“It is hard for a player like him sometimes – he wants to win really bad and sometimes too much. It is not a bad thing but sometimes he doesn’t trust his teammates but he is always there.
“He can play set pieces, score -penalties, make transitions and help in the last 15 minutes of the game. I am trying to help the team, not thinking about Bruno but the team [and] near the box he is so dangerous.”
The Europa League represents United’s only chance of securing European football for next season having been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions while sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League.
United picked up a point against second-placed Arsenal on Sunday and Amorim says his side’s confidence is building.
“The feeling – and you can feel the fans, the noise: it is hard to explain, you feel the confidence from the supporters, it was a really good night,” he said.
“The feeling is completely different, not just the result but the way we play. The good thing and the bad thing is after this game it is over and tomorrow we are going to think about Sunday [at Leicester City].
“It was a complete week [after drawing with Arsenal on Sunday]. We showed a little bit of the future, helped the problems of the present and had a good performance today.”
