Rory McIlory, J.J. Spaun head to rare Monday playoff at The Players

We're not done with The Players just yet!

After a bonkers final round on Sunday that featured a four-hour rain delay, numerous lead changes and some surprising contenders, Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun remain tied at 12-under par after 72 holes.

Yep, we're headed to a playoff.

Unfortunately, because of the rain delay, the two finalists won't be teeing off until Monday morning at TPC Sawgrass. It was simply too dark on the course by the time the final group reached the clubhouse to send McIlroy and Spaun back out onto the course.

So here's how it's going to work: Play will resume at 9 a.m. ET on Monday morning. McIlroy and Spaun will play a three-hole aggregate on arguably the toughest holes on the course, No. 16, No. 17 and No. 18. This is not a sudden death scenario. The best score after those three holes wins.

If we're still tied, the playoff moves to a sudden death beginning with No. 17 — then No. 18 and then No. 16, if needed.

It's only the second playoff at The Players since the aggregate format was introduced. Rickie Fowler won the first playoff under the current system in 2015, defeating Kevin Kisner and Sergio Garcia.

Coverage will be available on Golf Channel and streaming on Peacock when play resumes Monday morning.
