RHAM baseball defeats Avon Thursday, Lyman Memorial falls to Ledyard Friday

While the RHAM Raptors baseball team has had multiple games postponed due to the rain to start the season, they secured their first win of the season on Thursday.

Hosting the Avon Falcons, RHAM rolled to an 8-2 win to improve to 1-0.

RHAM got on the board in the first inning on a fielder’s choice from senior Trevor Gouche to give the Raptors a 1-0 lead.

The Raptors added a run in the second inning on an RBI single down the right field line from a sophomore, Derek Barone, to go up 2-0. Avon had trouble getting Barone out as he collected three hits on three at-bats.

After the next two innings were scoreless, RHAM added two runs in the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

While RHAM added a run in the sixth inning, Avon got on the board, scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning to stay within striking distance.

However, Avon couldn’t keep it a three-run game when they got their last at-bat. Instead, RHAM pulled away from Avon by scoring three runs to put the game out of reach.

Besides Gouche and Barone, RHAM had two other players who had RBIs. Senior pitcher Faiz Baig and sophomore Brendan Connolly each had two RBIs.

Baig earned the win for RHAM, pitching five innings and giving up two hits and no runs. He struck out five batters and walked one.

Lyman Memorial

After falling to the Stonington Bears in their season opener last Saturday 8-0, Lyman Memorial returned to the field hosting the Woodstock Academy Centaurs on Thursday. Lyman Memorial couldn’t bounce back, falling to the defending Class L champs 5-0.
