Report: Spurs criticised as top player hints at recovery mismanagement
Cristian Romero Unhappy With Spurs Injury Management Amid Transfer Speculation
Romero’s Discontent Simmers Beneath Surface
Cristian Romero may have returned to the pitch, but his words suggest the wounds of a turbulent few months have yet to heal. The Argentina international has subtly expressed his dissatisfaction with how Tottenham Hotspur handled his recent injury issues—raising eyebrows both within the club and among potential suitors across Europe.
Romero, who had been sidelined with ankle, toe and hamstring complaints, missed a significant chunk of the season. His absence, combined with an ever-growing injury list, has undercut Spurs’ campaign and left manager Ange Postecoglou battling both results and unavailability. The team is staring down the barrel of their worst Premier League finish in two decades.
Praise for Argentina, Question Marks Over Spurs
Romero played the full 90 minutes in Argentina’s World Cup qualifying victory over Uruguay—just his second complete outing since early November. His post-match comments, however, struck a nerve back in north London.
“I didn’t have a good few months because it was an injury that I could have returned much sooner from,” Romero said in Montevideo.
“I’m always grateful that the national team’s medical team was able to get me out of that bad moment and get me back on the field, which is what I like to do.”
The implications were unmistakable. While couched in praise for his national side, it read as a thinly veiled criticism of Spurs’ medical staff.
Injury Fallout Sparks Unrest at Tottenham
Spanish journalist Eduardo Burgos reported that Romero is “deeply upset” with Tottenham’s handling of his recovery and warned that “trouble is brewing.” For a player who wears the vice-captain’s armband and embodies the team’s fighting spirit, this growing tension is far from ideal.

The 26-year-old’s loyalty is now being tested as transfer rumours swirl. European champions Real Madrid are believed to be monitoring the situation closely. Having failed to sign a centre-back since 2022, and still seeking a long-term replacement after Eder Militao’s arrival, the Spanish giants may see Romero as a ready-made solution.
Future at Spurs Uncertain Amid Interest From Madrid
Romero has carved his path through Italy and now England after emerging at Belgrano in Argentina. While his on-pitch commitment has never been in question, this off-field discord could shape his next move.
If Tottenham cannot rebuild trust, both medically and emotionally, they risk losing one of their most influential figures.
