Report: NBA investigates OKC Thunder for potential player participation policy violation
The NBA has opened an investigation on the Oklahoma City Thunder for potentially violating the league's player participation policy in their Mar. 7 107-89 win over the Portland Trail Blazers, per ESPN's Shams Charania.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren, Jalen Williams, Lu Dort, Cason Wallace and Isaiah Hartenstein sat out. Everybody besides Gilgeous-Alexander was designated with an injury. The MVP candidate was listed out to rest.
This is the latest example of the NBA cracking down on improper absences. The Utah Jazz received a $100,000 fine earlier this week for similar reasons. The Philadelphia 76ers are also under investigation as they pivoted to keeping their top-six protected 2025 first-round pick.
The Thunder were in a stretch of a jam-packed post-All-Star break schedule where they played eight games in 13 days in seven different cities. Despite several top players being out, they came away with a double-digit win behind Aaron Wiggins' 30 points and Jaylin Williams' triple-double.
The NBA is investigating the Oklahoma City Thunder for potentially violating league's player participation policy, sources tell ESPN. Game under review is OKC’s March 7 win over Portland in which Thunder starting 5 (Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams, Holmgren, Dort, Hartenstein) sat.
