Real Madrid appear set for a reshuffle at left-back this summer, with Fran Garcia reportedly on the verge of an exit.

According to Real Madrid Confidencial, the Spanish full-back is attracting serious interest from Portuguese giants Benfica, who view him as a key reinforcement for next season.

Garcia’s journey this season has been anything but smooth. Initially seen as a useful rotational option amid Ferland Mendy’s recurring injury problems, the former Rayo Vallecano defender was handed several opportunities by Carlo Ancelotti.

However, he has struggled to truly stamp his authority on the left flank and has not lived up to expectations, particularly at a club where defensive solidity and offensive contribution are both vital requirements.

A good option… for backup!

His form has dipped drastically compared to the flashes he showed at the beginning of the campaign, and he is no longer considered a natural fit in Ancelotti’s system.

With the manager demanding more tactical versatility and technical finesse from his full-backs, Garcia has found himself marginalised.

This has opened the door for a potential move to Benfica — a club eager to bounce back after a disappointing European campaign.

The Portuguese side is already preparing for a more competitive 2025–26 season and see Garcia’s signing as a necessary step towards bolstering their defensive line.

Real Madrid can cash in on him

From Real Madrid’s perspective, the deal makes practical sense. Garcia’s market value is estimated at around €15 million, which could be an attractive financial boost heading into a summer where the club may explore other reinforcements.

With options like Miguel Gutierrez reportedly on the radar — a younger, technically gifted left-back who has developed considerably since leaving the club — there’s little room left for Garcia to fight for a place in the squad.

It’s also worth noting that Garcia’s form has not only failed to win over Ancelotti but also the Real Madrid faithful.

His lack of impact in high-pressure moments has drawn criticism, and a fresh start in a league like the Primeira Liga may be exactly what he needs to reignite his career.
