Pitt-Johnstown's Isaiah Vance advances to NCAA Division II wrestling semifinals, Trevon Gray locks down All-American honors
INDIANAPOLIS – Pitt-Johnstown’s Isaiah Vance (285 pounds) won his first two matches to reach the semifinals Friday at the 2025 NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships inside Corteva Coliseum.
Eighth-seeded Trevon Gray (125) locked down his second spot on the podium with his win in the second round of wrestle backs.
Session III will start at 10 a.m. Saturday and consist of the championship semifinals, third round of consolations, consolation semifinals and third-, fifth- and seventh-place matches. The parade of All-Americans will take place at 6:45 p.m., followed the finals scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday.
Gray (125), sixth-seeded Dakoda Rodgers (197) and Vance (285) all won first-round matches, while Chad Ozias (149) won a pigtail match and an opening-round match to advance to Friday’s quarterfinals.
Ozias and Rodgers both lost their next two bouts and were eliminated from the tournament.
Noah Gnibus (184) lost two decisions in both the first round and first round of the consolations and was also eliminated.
Vance, who is seeded fifth and finished fifth during the 2024 national tourney, opened the tournament with a 9-6 decision win over Indianapolis’ Cale Gray, then defeated Gannon’s Dorian Gray 8-2 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals where he will face Kutztown’s Freddie Ritter.
A 9-3 win over Glenville State’s Colton Drousias in the first round put Gray in the quarterfinals, where he fell to top-seeded Jackson Burks from Central Missouri by a 9-0 major decision. Gray, who finished seventh at the 2024 national tournament, bounced back with a 10-2 major decision win over No. 7 Isaiah Gamez from Adams State to reach Saturday’s action. He will take on Colorado Mesa’s Dayson Torgerson in the consolation quarterfinals.
Ozias defeated Hayden Kuhn 10-9 in a pigtail match to start the tournament before he held off seventh-seeded Jackson Hoover from Indianapolis 10-9 to lock up a spot in the quarterfinals against second-seeded Cael Larson from Augustana. Larson pinned Ozias at 6:31. Ozias fell to King’s Brennan Watkins 10-4 in the second round of the consolations.
Rodgers, the sixth seed, dealt Ashland’s Kaine Morris a 14-3 major-decision loss in the first round to record his 100th career victory, then faced Indianapolis’ defending national champion and third-seeded Derek Blubaugh in the quarterfinals.
Blubaugh used a minute of riding time to force overtime, then took down Rodgers with 23 seconds remaining in the extra period to secure a 6-3 win. Rodgers then fell to Grand Valley State’s Wyatt Miller in the second round of consolations.
After a narrow 2-0 setback in the first round to Augustana’s No. 4 seed Cade Mueller, Gnibus fell to Nebraska-Kearney’s Jacari Deal 7-2 in the first round of the consolations and was eliminated from the tournament.
