Peter Laviolette Feels Matt Rempe Is Treated Unfairly By Referees Becase Of Reputation
Matt Rempe has attempted to play a cleaner game as of late, but he still keeps finding himself in the penalty box.
Through the past two games, Rempe has been called on some very questionable penalties.
Against the Winnipeg Jets On Tuesday, Rempe was cross-checked into Connor Hellebuyck. The referees ultimately penalized Rempe for goaltender interference, which infuriated Peter Laviolette and the entire Rangers bench.
During Thursday night’s game against the Minnesota Wild, the 22-year-old was called for an interference penalty after Devin Shore literally bumped into him.
Due to his 6’8’’ frame and reputation as an enforcer, the referees seem to keep a closer eye on Rempe.
Laviolette feels that it’s almost unfair the way the skating giant is being treated this season.
“I think he draws attention,” Laviolette said. “I think just the size of him and the way he plays the game, he draws attention. It’s unfortunate because sometimes, like tonight, he’s not even doing anything and he’s in the box and it could come back and bite you.”
On multiple occasions, Laviolette has come to Rempe’s defense when talking about some of his controversial on-ice incidents.
After serving an eight-game suspension for a hit on Miro Heiskanen earlier this season, Rempe admitted that he’s a “marked man” and must be more careful with his hits.
There’s definitely a discussion to be had regarding the way in which Rempe is officiated and whether it’s unfair he is partly judged based on his overall reputation.
