Penn State wrestling to add a world champion? Get to know Masanosuke Ono
PHILADELPHIA − The Penn State wrestling dynasty could be on the verge of adding a world champion to its roster.
Japanese star Masanosuke Ono has enrolled in the university and is now officially listed in the student directory.
Ono, 21, has recently been training with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club and Penn State coach Cael Sanderson and staff in State College.
Ono made a stunning international entrance a year ago in the 61kilogram weight class. He won the Under-20 World Championships in September, outscoring his opponents by a combined 38-2 − including a victory over Penn State recruit Marcus Blaze (7-2), the top high school wrestler in the nation.
A month later, Ono won the 2024 (non-Olympic) World Championships in Albania with dominant wins over world champs Vito Arujau and Zaur Uguev.
He did it again in February: Ono defeated Olympic silver medalist and Pennsylvania native Spencer Lee, 3-2, in a challenge match sponsored by Flowrestling.
Ono's inclusion in the Penn State student directory was posted Thursday morning by national wrestling insider Pat Mineo. This comes at Penn State wrestling begins its chase for its 12th team title in 14 years at the NCAA Wrestling Championships this week at the Wells Fargo Center.
