Six different Oklahoma players scored in double figures and third-seeded Sooners beat No. 6-seed Iowa in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Monday, 96-62.
OU will play the winner of No. 2-seed Connecticut and No. 10-seed South Dakota State in the Sweet 16. The Sooners haven't made the Sweet 16 since the 2012-13 season. The last time Oklahoma played UConn in the NCAA Tournament came in 2002 when they met in the national championship game, an 82-70 Huskies win.
Oklahoma was far from perfect against Iowa, shooting just 41% from the field. But Iowa committed 20 turnovers and the Sooners outrebounded their opponents, 64-33, to seal things. Too many second-chance points combined with too many points off turnovers for the Hawkeyes to linger very long at Lloyd Noble Arena.
A 16-1 run to end the first quarter provided OU with a nine-point lead heading into the second. Then, after Liz Scott's 3-pointer early in the third quarter made it a 14-point advantage, Iowa never came within 11 points again. Scott and Zya Vann each scored in double figures off the bench.
Skylar Vann led Oklahoma with 17 points, while adding six rebounds. Peyton Verlhurst scored 16 points with seven rebounds. Raegan Beers added 11 points with 13 rebounds and four blocks. Lucy Olsen led Iowa with 20 points, but she shot just 7 of 20 from the field.
