Nick Nurse provides latest on Tyrese Maxey as Sixers move forward

NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia 76ers will have six games left in the 2024-25 season after they take on the New York Knicks on Tuesday night. Sitting at 23-52, the Sixers are already eliminated from playoff contention, but there is still a chance their star guard returns from injury.

Tyrese Maxey is out against the Knicks on Tuesday, but he did return to practice on Friday, March 28. Coach Nick Nurse wants Maxey to return as there are still games left on the schedule. The focus is to get him back out there if he is healthy enough to do so.

"He did practice, as you know, the other day," Nurse said on Tuesday before the matchup with the Knicks. "It went just 'medium'. It didn't like 'Oh, that was great', you know? So it's just medium, but he's still working. He's working out today (Tuesday). We'll work out tomorrow, and again, we're hoping it feels a little bit better."

Nurse did say the All-Star guard got a splint on his right finger that has been bothering him as of late. At this point, it's all about pain tolerance and making sure he won't further injure the finger. On the flip side, there isn't much reason to throw him out there with the Sixers just playing out the string so it will be interesting to see what happens.

"He got a splint put on there," Nurse added. "It felt like he kinda liked it, but after going through practice, it bothered him post practice a little bit again. We're working out and trying to get him back on the court."

Nurse did add that Maxey will be day-to-day at this point in his recovery. The Sixers will play host to the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday.
