NHL Fantasy Hockey Waiver Wire Defensemen Pickups March 20 - Sharks' Cagnoni, Leading AHL Rookie Defensemen in Scoring, Set to Make NHL Debut
On every game day this season, THN Fantasy will highlight players and goalies for fantasy managers to stream or roster for the rest of the season. The recommended players and goalies are rostered in less than 50 percent of Yahoo leagues and can be selected in standard fantasy leagues or for daily fantasy games.
Brady Skjei, NSH vs. ANA (44% rostered)
I like the matchup but not necessarily the player, though Skjei has scored four points in his past six games. His offensive upside is not high despite playing a lot of minutes with PP1, and the Preds offense has gone dry with only two goals in their past three games, but the Ducks do seem vulnerable at the moment with 11 goals allowed in their past two games. Skjei can also provide a modest amount of blocks and hits.
Justin Faulk, STL vs. VAN (33% rostered)
Faulk continues his hot run with two points in Nashville on Tuesday, extending his points streak to four games. The veteran defender has really stepped up his offense lately thanks to an excellent power play on the Blues. He’s playing on a red-hot unit with Dylan Holloway and Jake Neighbours. The drawback is the Canucks PK is very, very good, but no defenseman on the waiver wire is hotter than Faulk right now.
Martin Fehervary, WSH vs. PHI (7% rostered)
Not often does a third-pairing defenseman get any attention in fantasy, but note Fehervary has an assist in consecutive games and three points in his past five games. He’s great for blocks and hits, but his current scoring bump makes him an intriguing play. He tends to score in bunches; he scored four points in four games immediately before and after 4 Nations, and the Flyers should be an easy matchup.
Artyom Levshunov, CHI vs. LA (6% rostered)
The Kings are back to their stingy defensive selves, which is tough for the Hawks. (To be fair, all matchups are tough for arguably the league’s worst team). Levshunov is a bright spot, though, with a point in each of his past two games, including a power-play assist Tuesday against the Kraken. I think Levshunov's offensive upside is higher than Alex Vlasic’s, who also scored a point Tuesday, mostly due to his PP1 minutes.
Luca Cagnoni, SJ vs. CAR (0% rostered)
A fourth-round pick from 2023, Cagnoni is yet another example of an undersized, supremely skilled offensive defenseman that’s in vogue these days. In his first pro season, the 5-foot-9 Cagnoni leads the Sharks’ minor-league affiliate in scoring among defensemen and ranks third overall in rookie scoring in the league with 47 points in 56 games. He’s expected to make his NHL debut and already been tasked with quarterbacking their top power play since neither Timothy Liljegren nor anyone else on the roster have been able to do so adequately. I’m not sure how many chances the Sharks power play will get, or if they’ll even touch the puck very often against a dominant puck possession team in the Canes, but Cagnoni is worth considering in very deep leagues.
