In the NFL in 2025, replay assist for penalties is coming. At the annual league meeting on Tuesday in Florida, owners approved a proposal submitted by the competition committee.
The league will now allow the replay official to help determine whether a foul has been committed, but for the purpose of eliminating erroneous penalties. It will not help a penalty be called, but rather, in the case of a personal foul, facemask or roughing the passer, for example, when there is clear video evidence that no flag should have been thrown, it will overturn a penalty.
The idea is to allow officials to err on the side of personal safety when making on-the-field calls for late hits, hits out of bounds and such if appears that an infraction could have occurred, but the replay official can eliminate obvious cases when no foul occurred.
This might add a couple of minutes to a game, but eliminating penalties on plays where there weren't any will be a relief to fans.
