NFL free agency: Cooper Kupp decides on next team
The New Orleans Saints have been active in the free agent market so far this offseason, and have finalized a few signings to improve their roster. Additionally, they nearly wrapped up a deal with cornerback Charvarius Ward, and most recently, were seen as a potential suitor for former All-Pro wide receiver Cooper Kupp.
Unfortunately, they lost out on the latter as well, as Kupp has chosen to sign with the Seattle Seahawks, as was reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The contract is a three-year deal worth $45 million, this information being provided by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
When it came down to it, it seems the Saints were one of the final few teams in on the All-Pro wide receiver, who admittedly has slightly lost a step compared to the best years of his career. His ability to generate separation was somewhat stagnant for the early parts of the season, and while it did pick up near the end of the year, the inconsistency of it makes his game a little bit concerning.
Regardless, he is a phenomenal route runner who knows the game better than many, and his success speaks for itself. He will no doubt be utilized well with the Seahawks bringing in Klint Kubiak this offseason to be their offensive coordinator.
It would have been hard for the Saints to validate using $15 million a year of their already stringent cap space on a wide receiver who is on the older side of his career, as they look to somewhat move more towards youth in many cases, or at least younger than previous years.
