New York Giants drop to dead last in latest ESPN power rankings
To most national media figures who cover the NFL, the New York Giants can't do anything right these days.
Big Blue's poor performance over the past decade has left many experts leery of whether they are actually on their way back up from the NFL's basement.
In ESPN Nation's ranking of all 32 NFL teams after free agency, the Giants ranked -- you guessed it -- 32nd.
They cited the Giants' best move this offseason as the signing of former Dallas Cowboys defensive end Chauncey Golston.
The Giants badly needed to add defensive line depth. Golston is one of several new defenders. He had a solid 9.3% pass rush win rate as a defensive tackle with the Cowboys last season, which would have ranked 21st in the NFL if he had played enough snaps there to qualify. He seems to be an ideal fit next to Dexter Lawrence II in pass-rush situations with New York.
It was a nice addition that serves two purposes. First, to replace outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari (who signed with Philadelphia last week) and second, to possibly backfill former first round pick Kayvon Thibodeaux, who the Giants have yet to commit a fifth year to.
But the dead-last ranking is being duly earned by general manager Joe Schoen, who, in his fourth offseason is still without a competitive solution at quarterback.
For the Giants to change the negative opinion of themselves they must first change the narrative. That can only come through winning, something they haven't done much of since their victory in Super Bowl XLVI in February 2012.
