New Orleans Saints OC in attendance to watch Florida QB at pro day

The New Orleans Saints have been taking trips all around the country to catch the pro days of many different schools as prospects prepare for the 2025 NFL draft. This has led to meetings being reported and coach locations being tracked to determine who is where during this process, and to see which prospects may be connected to which team. With the Saints having a strong look at the quarterback draft class this year, they have made their rounds to many major schools to see the top prospects at the position as well as some of the others who will be draftable in likely later rounds.

One of the quarterbacks who has piqued the interest of the Saints is Florida's Graham Mertz, as Tom Pelissero of NFL Network recently reported that offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier attended their pro day, and specifically tuned in to Mertz's throwing session.

Mertz is an extremely intriguing prospect, who despite suffering a torn ACL against the Tennessee Vols on Oct. 12, has shown flashes of elite talent and was able to throw at the pro day. In 2023 he was very efficient, throwing a conference-leading 72.9% completion rate on 358 attempts, for 2,903 yards and 20 touchdowns to only 3 interceptions. This has always been the key to his production, play the short game, complete quick passes to a short route tree, and then let the players around him do the work.

He has shown some touch on longer-range throws before however, such as this one where he threw from the 40-yard line and put the ball right where the receiver could get it up high at the 5-yard line. If NFL coaches can develop him well and utilize the talents he has in the right way, he may be a good project worth taking in Day 3 of the draft.
