New Arizona Cardinals QB Jacoby Brissett wanted to reunite with familiar staff
New Arizona Cardinals pass rusher Josh Sweat noted the familiarity he had with the team's coaching staff as one of the reasons why he chose to sign his free agent deal with them. Another of their free agent additions has a lot of connections in the building.
Quarterback Jacoby Brissett was introduced to the media after he signed his two-year contract worth a reported $12.5 million. He is another with extensive connections with the team and that factored into his coming to Arizona.
Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing was his quarterbacks coach with the Cleveland Browns in 2022. Quarterbacks coach Israel Woolfork worked with Brissett in Cleveland with Petzing as an assistant.
Head coach Jonathan Gannon was a position coach when Brissett played for the Indianapolis Colts. Brissett was in Indy from 2017-2020. Gannon was the defensive backs coach there from 2018-2020.
Brissett even crossed paths with Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort, who worked for the New England Patriots when they drafted him in the third round in 2016.
"Who you go to work with every day" was what Brissett was looking for as he enters his 10th NFL season.
"My relationship with Drew and Iz and J.G. drew me here a lot," he said. "I think if I can go work with the people I go with every day and enjoy going to work, then the football stuff will take care of itself."
After the legal period for communication with free agents began on Monday, the Cardinals called Brissett. He said that he told them, "I've wanted to be here and be back with Drew and be with Israel." The decision to sign with Arizona was "kind of fast."
He said he is friends with Woolfork and Petzing outside of football. He and Woolfork had a conversation before the free agent period began, but about golf. He told reporters that once the free agent period began, he couldn't talk to either for al little bit, just to avoid tampering allegations.
It wasn't the first time the Cardinals tried to add Brissett. Last offseason, after he played a season for the Washington Commanders, he said the Cardinals reached out. He signed with New England and the Cardinals instead traded for Desmond Ridder.
Now, things came together.
He gives the Cardinals their first proven backup since Colt McCoy. The $6.25 million per-year average he gets in his new deal with Arizona is the most the Cardinals have ever paid a backup.
He is ready to see how he can help improve the team.
