More medals for Sofie Garcia to lead North at state gymnastics
Sofie Garcia capped off one of the more decorated careers in Bloomington North gymnastics history by earning two more medals at the IHSAA state finals at Ball State's Warthan Arena in Muncie on Saturday.
Garcia, a senior who has competed at state all four years, earned medals in vault and all-around last year and came back to grab her highest finishes yet, tying for fourth on beam with a 9.3 and floor with a 9.275. It gives her seven top-10 finishes in the finals.
Garcia was also 11th on bars at 9.275 and had an 8.6 on vault to finish 12th in the all-around at 36.5.
"She's pretty amazing," North coach Andrea Smith said. "Between the two years, she's placed on every event but bars and moved up in the rankings this year. And that was huge considering those came on our first two events. She was the eighth competitor on beam and that score held up."
North's other all-arounder was senior Hannah Abel, who was 29th in 34.025, reaching 34 for the second straight time and was the only Cougar to score on all four events at the meet.
"I was really proud of Hannah," Smith said. "She had not competed all-around until this season and she ended up scoring on every event for us. That's huge and she was the only one to be used on all four, so that's amazing right there."
North, with tempered team expectations, was ninth as a team with a 104.25 with the top six above 108. The Cougars had a 25.625 on beam, 26.7 on floor, 26.1 on vault and 25.825 on bars.
"I think they had a lot of fun," Smith said. "But it was bittersweet with some tears knowing the seniors careers were over. They've put a lot of years in the gym and it comes a lot quicker than they realize.
"I was proud of their performance. Starting off on beam is always tough and didn't go as well as they hoped, but they picked it up on the final three events."

Zoe Rogers led North on vault with an 8.775 with Abel at 8.675 and Ella Buehler at 8.65. Abel (8.475) and Tori Bilohlavek (8.075) rounded out the top three on bars. Sofia Winkle (8.35) and Abel (7.925) scored on beam while Abel (22nd in 8.95), Winkle (8.475) were scorers on floor.
"All of them did really well," Smith said. "Zoe, Sofie, Marin (Winkle), Tori, they all don't have as much experience at these high level competitions as the seniors but they did great. I know they'll definitely take what they did today, learn from it and grow on it, so next year, they can come back even stronger."

Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger won its sixth title but first since 2012 with 112.975 points to top Valparaiso (111.7), Angola (108.75) and Columbus North (108.275). Dwenger went 3-4 in the all-around and 2-3-4 on vault. Valpo has amazingly finished in the top two 16 of the last 18 years.
Jullian Creager of Homestead was the all-around champ with a 37.975 to top Valpo's Megan Garibay by a mere .05 with two Dwenger athletes going 3-4. Garibay won vault (9.775), Creager won bars (9.675). Chesterton's Samantha Boster won beam (9.675) and Dwenger's Kobi Johnson won floor (9.625).
