Monterey's Aaliyah Chavez adds 2nd national girls basketball player of the year award

Aaliyah Chavez made more history Wednesday.

The Monterey girls basketball standout was awarded Gatorade National Player of the Year. Chavez is the first from Lubbock to earn the honor.

Chavez, ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the class of 2025, was also named Naismith's national player of the year, as well as a McDonald's All-American. She is Gatorade's two-time player of the year for Texas.

Chavez is the first player from Texas to receive Gatorade's national award since Brianna Turner in 2014. The Manvel product went to Notre Dame and became a first-round WNBA draft pick. Turner signed in February to play for the Indiana Fever.

Chavez also learned this week she made the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches all-state team for Class 5A. That makes her a four-time selection.

In leading Monterey to its first state championship since 1981, Chavez averaged 34.5 points, 9.1 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 3.7 steals and 1.2 blocks. She will make her college decision at a ceremony March 25.
