Milan Player Ratings vs Como: Almighty Reijnders Can Do It All
Milan completed a Serie A double over newcomers Como with a comeback win at the San Siro on Saturday evening. In a carbon copy of January’s reverse fixture, Sergio Conceicao’s charges fought back from a goal down to claim a 2-1 victory.
Seeking only a third set of back-to-back league wins this season after a stunning 3-2 triumph at Lecce last weekend, Milan didn’t start the game well. By contrast, Como had the 19-time Italian champions on the ropes for most of the first half before finding a well-deserved opener through Lucas Da Cunha in the 33rd minute.
The same player thought he had doubled the visitors’ lead early in the second half, only for VAR to disallow his goal for one of the most bizarre offside calls you’ll see this season. Milan replied moments later as Tijjani Reijnders set Christian Pulisic up for the equalizer, though the USMNT forward took much credit with a superb finish.
Reijnders went from a provider to a goalscorer, getting on the end of Tammy Abraham’s defense-splitting pass before picking out the near bottom corner with pinpoint precision to complete the turnaround. As a result, Milan will temporarily leapfrog Roma and Fiorentina and spend the night in seventh.
Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.
Milan (4-2-3-1)
Mike Maignan – 7.5
Despite being beaten from distance, there wasn’t much he could do as Da Cunha struck the ball with a laser-sharp precision. However, he was the only reason Milan stood a fighting chance in this game, making numerous vital saves in the first half.
Kyle Walker – 5.5
It feels like his lavish lifestyle in Italy is starting to temper with his on-field performances as he made two atypical mistakes, which nearly led to goals for Como.
Matteo Gabbia – 6
The Milan homegrown defender can’t be proud of tonight’s display. His interventions failed to instill confidence while he looked shaky in possession.
Malick Thiaw – 5.5
Swooped in for Strahinja Pavlovic as a left center-back, the German wasn’t an upgrade on the Serbian giant, proving erratic on and off the ball.
Theo Hernandez – 3
Conceicao’s decision to take him off at halftime says it all. Theo’s head is seemingly far away from Milan.
Yunus Musah – 6
Despite putting in plenty of energy and determination, his limited playmaking skills derailed Milan’s creativity in the first half. Subbed off shortly after picking up a booking.
Warren Bondo – 6.5
The winter signing was slightly more involved in the build-up than his abovementioned midfield colleague but often lacked the final touch or missed the timing for a pass.
Rafael Leao – 6
Another disjointed performance from the Milan talisman! Wasteful in possession and unable to make a difference in one-on-one duels, the Portuguese winger had another forgettable game.
Tijjani Reijnders – 8
After a relatively quiet first half, Milan’s best player this season turned on the engines in the second half to inspire the comeback. He was the mastermind behind this victory.
Christian Pulisic – 7.5
All misplaced balls and unforced errors from the first half vanished in the blink of an eye when he slotted home a sublime finish to draw Milan level.
Santiago Gimenez – 5
The Mexican striker cut a frustrated character as his teammates failed to create him a goalscoring opportunity.
Substitutes
Alejandro Jimenez – 6.5
Joao Felix – 5.5
