Mike Gundy Wants to Revive Historic College Football Rivalry Game As Spring Scrimmage
College football fans are still getting used to the sport's new landscape following a massive wave of conference realignment and the expansion of the College Football Playoff.
Although the playoffs' expansion from four to 12 led to one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons ever, realignment eliminated some of the sport's most beloved rivalries. One iconic rivalry that fell victim to a program leaving a conference was the game between the Oklahoma Sooners and Oklahoma State Cowboys, called Bedlam.
With Oklahoma off to the SEC and Oklahoma State in the Big 12, the two programs that have been playing one another since 1904 did not face off in 2024. They also aren't scheduled to play one another anytime soon.
Something that Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy offered up a solution for on Tuesday.
When speaking to the media, Gundy suggested that Bedlam take place at each school during the spring session rather than having a traditional spring game.
"Honestly, for us," Gundy said. "We should do a home-and-home with OU (Oklahoma)...in the spring...They should come here on the 19th...We should go down there and play a home-and-home in the spring against them. Charge $25 a head and they can use it for NIL. We'll use it for NIL. If they don't want to do two in one spring, we can do one here this year and one there next year and split the gate."
Gundy also admitted he drew inspiration from Colorado's Deion Sanders, who is currently trying to arrange a spring game against Syracuse. As of right now, the biggest obstacle for either event taking place is the NCAA, who doesn't currently allow teams to practice with another.
However, with the death of spring games becoming more prevalent, this could be a fun way to revive the game and a rivalry.
