Miedema nets brace as Manchester City inflict first defeat of the season on Chelsea
Vivianne Miedema came off the bench to score twice as Manchester City recorded a 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie at The Joie Stadium this evening.
Prior to this evening’s game, Chelsea had gone unbeaten all season under the guidance of new head coach Sonia Bompastor, however, their 31-game run was brought to an end by Nick Cushing’s hard-working Manchester City outfit.
Manchester City started the match brightly and Kerolin had an early attempt on goal but she dragged her shot just wide of the net.
At the other end, Aggie Beever-Jones made an impeccable run through the middle before trying her luck at a goal, but her shot was blocked by home keeper Ayaka Yamashita.
Manchester City youngster Lily Murphy then took full advantage of a loose ball and darted towards the Chelsea box. She took aim at goal but Chelsea keeper Hannah Hampton managed to get down low and block the shot.
Manchester City’s interim boss Cushing opted to bring on seasoned attacker Miedema for the second half and it was the Dutchwoman who broke the deadlock on the hour mark. The forward’s initial effort hit the crossbar, but she was on-hand to convert with the second opportunity.
Chelsea immediately searched for an equaliser and they thought that they had one 19 minutes from time when Mayra Ramírez put the ball into the net, but the flag went up for offside.
A Johanna Rytting Kaneryd strike then hit the crossbar before Miedema netted a decisive second goal for Manchester City as she fired the ball into the bottom corner of the net.
Manchester City and Chelsea face each other again at The Etihad Stadium in the Barclays Women’s Super League on Sunday afternoon while the second leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie takes place at Stamford Bridge next Thursday.
