Michigan State hockey earns No. 1 seed in Toledo Regional, will face Cornell
The Michigan State hockey team's quest for a national championship will begin just a few hours from campus.
As expected, the Spartans, who became the first team in Big Ten history on Saturday night to win a second straight league tournament title, learned Sunday it would be the No. 1-seed in the Toledo Regional in Toledo, Ohio, when the NCAA tournament begins Thursday.

MSU, the No. 2-seed overall in the 16-team tournament, will face Cornell, the winner of the East Coast Athletic Conference tournament at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday (ESPN+). If the Spartans win that game, they could see a very familiar team in the regional championship. Big Ten rival Ohio State, the No. 3-seed in the regional will face 2-seed Boston University, out of Hockey East, in the other semifinal.
MSU is coming off a tense night that ended in jubilation on Saturday against the Buckeyes when Big Ten Player of the Year Isaac Howard capped a four-point night by scoring the game-wining goal in double overtime to secure the Spartans' 4-3 victory in the Big Ten tournament championship game, setting off a loud celebration at Munn Ice Arena.
Two other Big Ten teams made the NCAA tournament field, which was announced on the NCAA Hockey Selection Show on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota earned a No. 2-seed in the Fargo Regional, matching up with No. 3-seed Massachusetts out of Hockey East. Penn State earned the No. 4-seed in the Allentown Regional, where the Nittany Lions are the host school, and will face No. 1-seed Maine, which won the Hockey East tournament on Friday night.
Boston College earned the No. 1 overall seed in the Manchester Regional. Western Michigan (Fargo) earned the final No. 1 seed after defeating Denver in double overtime to win the NCHC Tournament on Saturday night.
The Spartans (26-6-4, 15-5-4 Big Ten) will face off with Cornell (18-10-6, 10-8-4 ECAC) Thursday at the Huntington Center, home of the ECHL's Toledo Walleye. The Huntington Center has a capacity of 8,000 people and is less than two hours from East Lansing and less than an hour from the metro Detroit area.
