Memphis basketball star PJ Haggerty earns consensus All-American honors
Memphis basketball star PJ Haggerty became a consensus All-American Wednesday.
The sophomore guard earned second-team honors from the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) and a third-team nod from the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) to complete the clean sweep of what the NCAA recognizes for consensus status. Haggerty had already landed second-team spots on The Associated Press and The Sporting News lists.
The Tigers (29-5) are set to face Colorado State (25-9) in the first round of the NCAA tournament Friday (1 p.m., TBS) in Seattle.
Haggerty becomes the first consensus All-American since 2008, when Chris Douglas-Roberts was earned first-team honors across the board. The last time a Tiger was a consensus second-team All-American was 2006 (Rodney Carney). Haggerty is the seventh consensus All-American in program history, joining Douglas-Roberts, Carney, Lorenzen Wright (1996), Penny Hardaway (1993), Keith Lee (1983-85) and Larry Finch (1973).
A transfer from Tulsa, Haggerty is having a dream season for Memphis. Last season's AAC Freshman of the Year scored the league's player of the year award last week. He ranks third in the country in scoring (21.8 points per game) and is No. 1 in the nation in total points (741).
Those 741 points are also third-most in single-season history at Memphis. Only Davis (744) and Dajuan Wagner (762) have had more in one season.
The Crosby, Texas, native is the only player in the country averaging at least 21.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. If you also throw in 6.5 made free throws per game, he becomes the first player in Division I with that stat line since Ja Morant in 2018-19.
