March Madness will be Tre Johnson's last hurrah as a Texas Longhorn
Tre Johnson is one of the best players the Texas Longhorns men's basketball team has had in a long time. The super freshman was a huge recruiting win for coach Rodney Terry and has been Texas' best player this season. But his time in Austin is quickly coming to an end.
Johnson will be a one-and-done player at Texas, just like Kevin Durant was. USA TODAY Sports ranks the guard as the sixth best pro prospect in the upcoming NBA Draft. The Sporting News has Johnson getting picked fourth in the draft by the New Orleans Pelicans. Bleacher Report projects him going No. 6 to the Philadelphia 76ers.
Tonight could be the last time Longhorns fans see Johnson in Burnt Orange and White. The best way to see more of Johnson as a Longhorn is for freshman from Garland, Texas to take his game to an even higher level and push Texas deeper into the NCAA Tournament.
Averaging almost 20 points a game and close to 40% from beyond the arch, Johnson definitely has been the bright spot in UT's season. But we haven't seen Johnson consistantly take over games, like Durant used to. And honestly, like a top five draft pick should be able to. In fact, Johnson's worst game came in what was thought to be a must-win game to close the regular season against Oklahoma.
Some of that is the team that's assembled around Johnson. But if the Horns are going to advance past the First Four matchup with Xavier, Johnson is going to have to be the main catalyst.
Johnson won't be forgotten by Texas fans, but without a big of a tournament run, he won't be remembered in the same regard as KD or TJ Ford or LaMarcus Aldridge. But a couple epic games and he'll go near the top of the list.
