LSU baseball pitching staff makes history in sweep of Oklahoma

LSU baseball's pitching staff accomplished something it hadn't done in over 30 years. In a three-game sweep of Oklahoma, LSU did not allow a single earned run. The last time the Tigers pulled that off was 1992.

It started with a complete game shutout from ace Kade Anderson on Thursday night. Anderson struck out 14 and allowed just one extra-base hit and two walks.

On Friday, Anthony Eyanson pitched into the sixth inning. He struck out eight as the Sooners only tallied three hits. He allowed two runs, but neither were earned. Reliever Casan Evans finished the game with 3.1 shutout innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

On Sunday, Chase Shores logged his best SEC start of the year. The big righty allowed one run, but it was unearned. That was needed after Shores allowed 12 runs over his last three starts. Shores ERA is down to 4.66 on the year.

Following Shores' outing, LSU's top bullpen arm, Zac Cowan, entered the game for a four-out save. Cowan also allowed a run, but again, it was unearned.

We're nearing the halfway point of the SEC schedule. LSU should feel good about its pitching staff right now. There are questions about LSU's bullpen, but when the starters pitch deep into games, Jay Johnson can stick to his best arms like Cowan and Evans.

Cowan, who was a starter at his previous stop, delivered the type of clutch long relief outing that can be critical in June.
